Mode of Action

Cefuroxime is a bactericidal antibiotic, which exerts antibacterial activity by inhibition of bacterial cell wall synthesis in susceptible species. Cefuroxime has good stability to several bacterial beta-lactamase enzymes and, consequently, is active against many resistant strains of susceptible species.

Indication

FC tab: Infections due to gm +ve & gm -ve bacteria; surgical prophylaxis; more active against Haemophilus influenzae & Neisseria gonorrhea; Lyme disease. Oral susp: Treatment of susceptible infections including bone & joint; bronchitis (& other lower resp tract infections), gonorrhea, meningitis, otitis media, peritonitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, skin infections (including soft tissue infections) & UTI. Surgical infection prophylaxis.

Dosage / Direction of Use

Tablet: Adult Uncomplicated UTI 125 mg bid. Resp tract infection 250-500 mg bid. Oral susp: Adult Uncomplicated resp tract infection 2.5 mL bid. Resp tract infection 5-10 mL bid. Childn >2 yr Otitis media 5 mL or 15 mg/kg bid. Max: 10 mL daily. >3 mth 2.5 mL or 10 mg/kg bid. Max: 5 mL daily.

Contraindication

Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.

Special Precaution

History of allergy. Oral susp: Patients w/ renal impairment. Monitor renal hematological status especially during prolonged & high-dose therapy.

Drug Interaction

Reduced renal clearance w/ probenecid.
